My mom lives out of state. She recently has become blind and needs some kind of assistance. She lives on her own and no relatives are around.

Since blindness is new to Mom, i would contact the Disabilities Dept in her county and see if there is some kind of training she can receive.

I also agrer, time for Assited living.

I think she needs more than "some kind" of assistance. I think she needs full-time assistance, as in Assisted Living. I'm so sorry for her circumstances and the stress it is causing. There are solutions, if you both accept it as such. Being recently blind she will need 24/7 in-home care which will cost as much or more than facility care. My experience is with faith-based facilities: they see the care as a mission and also receive partial funding from their main faith organization so their fees are usually more affordable.

You should not rely on relatives to step in and care for your mother anyway. Go see her right away and determine what the next steps should be! Some issues cannot be handled long distance and this is one of them. You'll need to determine if mom needs Assisted Living, if her home needs to be sold to finance it, if she needs help to come in the home instead, etc.
You shouldn't guess at her needs but take a firsthand look at her to see for yourself how shes functioning or not functioning. Only then will you be able to determine her true needs.

I'm sorry mom has lost her vision, that's a VERY difficult loss to live with. If this were me, I'd want an apartment in Assisted Living where there were always people around to help me, meals prepared, cleaning, laundry, etc.
