Our 28 yo son was married with 1 child when he was diagnosed with stage IV cancer in Feb 2016. Do we qualify for assistance through the VA?

His wife left him and did not reconcile through his illness. He came to stay with his father and I. Do we qualify for assistance through the VA? I was unable to work. I was his sole caregiver until March 23, 2019. I have not been successful finding work since his passing, and the $6,000 for his funeral is the last of any funds we have ever accumulated in our 35 years of marriage.

You need to call the VA. There is so much information lacking in your question that no one can tell you what you are qualified for or not.

I am sorry for your loss, I know how hard it is to lose a child. Hugs to you.

I would also contact other charitable organizations in your area and see if you qualify for some assistance from that avenue, they will probably have a list of social services as well.

It is certainly worth contact the VA Benefits office in your area to find out if there is anything that could help, even retroactively. Please check VA.org to find your office or go to the local VA hospital for assistance. I am very sad for your loss and this entire situation. Blessings to you...

You cannot get retroactive pay for your son who has passed away thru Aid and attendance. That is specifically for spouses and dependent children in certain cases and when the veteran is alive. I am sorry for your loss.
