How do I know when my mother with Parkinson's will need assisted living?

toadballet1 Feb 2011
My mother has had Parkinson's for the last 15 years...and it has not progressed that much.
She lives in her own apt. right now (with lots of help from us.) She is able to dress, get to the bathroom, and do some light household things. Her mobility is compromised, but she is able to do a lot...just more slowly.
The best rule of thumb (not knowing your specifics) is to look for signs that she cannot take care of her basic needs or is of danger to herself.
I found that most assisted living centers would not work for my mom because she would not be able to get to a dining room on her own. Most of the care she would need would be considered "extras."
