Is Sundowning Syndrome only prevalent in Alzheimer's patients?

My Aunt's confusion, paranoia and hallucinations came on after hospitalization for broken ribs. The first incidents were at night, but now they are persisting into the day. We do not have a diagnosis, but I would like to be prepared for all eventualities.

My dad had sundowners and he had heart problems not alz.The ICU people told me it was more rare for someone to be in there 80's and not have sundowners esp. in the hospital. They told me it was very common and it did not mean alz.

Without medical testing, it's impossible to know. It may be medication-induced, or the disorientation that sometimes comes in being in unfamiliar surroundings for extended stay hospitalizations. Make sure her doctors know and try to get to the bottom of what may be happening. Good luck. Meds while in the hospital and routines can be very disorienting to some elders. When my parent is hospitalized, I try to be at her bedside early before she opens her eyes and last thing before she falls asleep at night to help provide her with some small measure of stability and comfort.

Sure wish you didn't have to go through what you are experiencing. It is so hard. Keep sharing. You'll find you are not alone. Many others here will understand.
