This is a very helpful article. We practice these skills and teach these skills to our caregivers at our agency all the time. This is a new way of communicating.
Thank you for this article. My live-in, 82 year old Mom is a lifelong alcoholic, who also suffers mild dementia. These compassionate communication tips have helped me to understand her mental limitations. Although initially difficult for me to implement as my Mom has a highly confrontational / insulting / condescending demeanor, I found that these tips have greatly helped to reduce stressful situations in our home.
