Mom and dad have been filing taxes but not deblaring def unctions. 2015 had lots of home care and meds expenses. So should I start doing doing deductions ? Income low with low pension and their Soc Security. Should I have their taxes done by senior center volunteers or use Turbotax like latter I do for myself?
If you are preparing or having to sign your partner's tax returns for the IRS and the state because they are no longer able to sign it either because of physical or mental reasons, then yes the IRS wants to know that you are the POA and they will provide you with a special identification code to write on the returns along with signing your name with the suffix, POA.
When getting that a guardianship or court approval to care for a loved one, make SURE it specifically appoints you to represent that person in all financial matters, including both state and federal taxes, SPECIFICALLY. POA that does not give you that specific power will not be acceptable to the IRS. Our elder attorney made that very clear to us regarding my MIL.

Payments to a home health agency is a medical expense and thus tax deductible. Do you prepare your own taxes or does someone do them for you?
