John~ Sadly, in the late 1970's my paternal grandfather lost his 2 year battle against prostate cancer as it had already spread to his bones. I believe the form of cancer he had was moderate to aggressive. In and around 2004 when my father's PSA was elevating his primary sent my father to a urologist and a biopsy was done. 2 of the 12 samples came back positive for cancer. My father decided on radiation therapy and that worked well for about 5 years until PSA level began again to rise. Having had radiation therapy, left my father with little options for further treatment so it hormone therapy suggested. The Lupron injection worked as far as bringing down the PSA but the side effects affected his quality of life. He decided no more Lupron. Almost 2 years later he was in the position of seeking more treatment and by that time (late 2010) his urologist suggested Fermagon. This did a beautiful job keeping the PSA down for about 2 years and he suffered no side effects. He only had the initial starter dose because at age 86, he passed from other health issues. My father believed in modern medicine and better treatment on the horizon. I don't know that I would want to wait until the cancer reaches the bones before seeking further treatment. I wish that my strong, proud grandfather had the options that my father had. Best wishes to you! ~Summer
