This is great advice, thanks so much for sharing! I especially think that identifying risky areas is imperative to preventing falls in older adults. For more helpful tips, this article provides further insight: https://anthemhomecare.com/falls-in-older-adults/

I love all the advice and I'm looking for someone to put in a walk in tub or shower for my mom she's a bigger woman and that has to be considered. I was hard enough building our new home and we have had things done to my parents home to give more handicap access but they got screwed. Trust doesn't come easy for me but I want my mom to be able to take a bath in her own home and not have to come to mine any advice!!!!

Well it was 2 years ago since my last post on this thread and a lot has changed. I could not get my very aging parents [mid-to-late 90's] to do any type of upgrading to help them age in place. Stairs were the huge hurdle, and no way was my Mom going to ride up in a lift chair so one was never installed, she and Dad would help each other go up and down the stairs [falling a few times]. Mom refused caregivers, too.

I also could not get my parents to downsize into a lovely senior apartment complex where there would have almost as much room as in their house.

Therefore it was an extremely stressful 7 years with my parents living in a house they should no longer be in. Then Mom passed and Dad was ready to move to senior living. He wanted the house sold. As I mentioned my parents never downsized, thus it took me months of going through all the things they had in that house during their 70+ years of marriage. At my age, 70, this was so very exhausting :[

Lot of good ideas to make the house safer.... but one also needs to think ahead when it comes time to sell the home, many of those additions would need to be dismantled and put back to original condition, thus an added cost :(

These are great points! In addition to grab bars, there are also tub rails and shower transfer benches to assist in getting in and out of the shower/tub safely. There are also portable shower chairs and benches that allow a more economical solution than built ins and are just as effective. Lastly, there are raised or elevated toilet seats( with and without arms) to help to toileting. Many of these products can be found online on websites such as amazon
