The median age of diagnosis for Alzheimer's is now something like age 62. This means that a whole bunch of baby-boomers fall into the 60-65 bracket and Alzheimer's is a real concern. Some people still believe that even "talking about it" is some kind of jinx that you will "get it" later, which may explain why they don't speak with their primary care MD about their symptoms.

However, memory dysfunction, especially if sudden, is NEVER normal...but it does not mean Alzheimer's. Other conditions like depression, heart failure, cancer, TIAs, electrolyte imbalance, etc. may also cause memory impairment. A thorough physical workup should always be done for anyone who is exhibiting signs of cognitive difficulties, especially if this is a new symptom for them.
