Well it has been 4 years since this article was written and I can guarantee that the vast majority of those dealing with the elderly have never heard of any these types of caregiving solutions. In my area there has been a building boom of higher end assisted living accommodations, but nothing for the most vulnerable who need skilled nursing care. Today I read a story in the newspaper of elders with behavioural problems being held in psychiatric ICU beds for months waiting for an appropriate bed in a facility that could accommodate their special needs.

I'm in my 50's, maybe by the time I need it there will a new model for care? How do we get the word out that there are alternatives to the status quo?

I've read about home like groups and improved living environments with pets, gardens, and childcare nearby. Most seem to be in the Western US or Canada, Australia, UK. How can we harness the power and influence of seniors and their families to advocate for change now, and citizens' volunteer groups to organize to help?

I recently read in passing about an unconventional and equally person centered dementia residence (i.e., Nursing Home) in, I think Montreal that struck me as being intelligently developed as well as compassionately managed. I'll have to try to recall its name.
