Dust mites are ubiquitous and harmless unless you are unfortunate enough be allergic to them. As for the remote, when a cold or stomach virus is going through the house pop the remote in a clear plastic bag and change it often, I guess if you are OCD you could keep it that way all the time ;)

Vapor from eucalyptus oil kills dust mites, and so does vapor from peppermint oil. Isopropyl alcohol kills them, too. Immediately before I lie down to sleep, I put at least six drops of either oil on each of two tissues or cotton balls, and put one by my legs or back, and the other on or beside my pillow. And I spray a mist of 91% or 100% isopropyl alcohol on curtains and carpet around my bed. I also keep weevils and other crawlers away by spraying a proper insecticide around my door, window, and bed. I am thus able to sleep soundly, without being awakened or annoyed by painful or itchy bites.

In my own home, I replace the pillows on the beds every year with new ones. I found the cheap ones at Target worked just as good. Then I saw my parent's pillows on their bed, good grief, those pillows must had been a wedding gift from 70 some years ago, and the now thickness of a tissue. I had bought my late parents new pillows, but Mom put them on the guest room bed. Oh well, I tried.

Regarding fragrances, it took a while for me to get my Mom to start using fragrance-free detergent and fragrance-free softener. What she had been using caused a strange odor when combined together... the whole house smelled of that mix.

The TV remote... let's not go there.

Vacuuming, my Mom use to vacuum every week the whole house. Once Mom passed, my Dad hired a caregiver to help him, and she tried Mom's vacuum. Lo and behold, turned out the vacuum sounded like it was working but the brush wasn't going around... ah, that explained why Mom never had vacuum bags on her grocery list in those seven years. The caregiver brought over her own vacuum the next time.

Now I need to give my own house the white glove test, and the sniff test !!

Better make it 7 and add the can opener(s). My mother used to refer to the cutting area of the can opener as the "dirtiest inch in the kitchen"! If you take a look at yours, you will see why!? I frequently spray it with bleach and scrub with a toothbrush!
