Sorry to say, but this site has been so depressing for a few days. I thought I'd ask an average, everyday question....to make us all feel a little more normal today.


I made Eggplant Lasagna, and my BIL and SIL are coming for dinner. They leave for Cali tomorrow to see their beautiful grand daughter.


Sorry, sometimes we just need some REGULAR conversation.......or at least THIS caregiver does.

DH chooses his pasta shape for spaghetti night . When I end up with near empty boxes of different shaped pasta , I start mixing them up and make ziti with it camouflaged with sauce , meat and cheeses. lol . Sometimes DH doesn’t even notice. 😂😂

You cut up the penne with scissors for soup? OMG. I thought my grandmother was the only person who did that. She used t make pasta fagioli soup or the summer garden stew(I forget what it's called in Italian) but it's made from yellow squash, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, and fresh basil. She used to put the cut up penne or cut up rigatoni in it and it was so good.

Not just soup , but when I make spaghetti ….We have given up on spaghetti and other string like noodles . It’s easier to stab a fork into penne, rigatoni, ziti, shells etc.
I think my DH is a kid picking out what shape pasta he wants for “ spaghetti night “ .
I’ve also been known to cut up penne with scissors for soup . 😬😜

Horrified, yes!
While I am horrified that you are cutting up your spaghetti, this action coincides with my recent (within the last two days) cutting up of linguine to go into the home made chicken noodle soup I made. About two inches long. Should I have cut it shorter to fit in a soup spoon?

And the second thing: Cooking the pasta in the soup, without boiling it separate so we get all the starch too.

What has become of life, if you cut up your pastas?

Not sure that I am really a foodie, but that is okay.

I wanted something reasonably healthy that I could make all at once and was totally different from the roast veg and chicken I've been eating for the last two days (yesterday was supposed to be chicken pot pie but sis called during my prep time so in the end I just reheated everything from the day before). I settled on chili soup, more or less just chili with the addition of beef broth and corn. But I'm finding I don't really like soups with thin broth any more so I ended up breaking bread into the bowl to soak up the juices, something that once upon a time drove me crazy when my father used to do it. I've also discovered that cutting up my spaghetti like he did makes it easier to eat with just a spoon. I'm sure foodies everywhere would be horrified lol

Sounds good, brandee. Love a fresh green salad.

I had soup I made from a very thin soup I had frozen - threw in some ground chicken and spinach. It was very good and filling. I find these days I am liking a lettuce and tomato sandwich on seeded bread.

Our regular side salad that goes every night with dinner

chopped romaine lettuce (for crunch)
arugula (rocket)
carrot shreds
1 small pepper sliced (the big ones get mushy in the frig)
sliced mushroom
cherry tomatoes (cut in half)
occasionally some herbs from the garden
topped with oil and vinegar

Golden - the bread turned out okay, I got two loaves out of it so I froze one for later. Unfortunately I got distracted and over baked it so it's a little dry.

Oh, yes! Definitely soup days.

cw - agreed breakfast for supper is great. That was a ton of very tasty calories. How did the bread turn out? At one point I got pretty comfortable messing around with bread recipes. It was fun.

Hothouse, the Italian wedding soup sounds awesome. Very generous of you to share it with family. I have done that when we were closer together.

I brought in the last of the turkey soup from the outside freezer (balcony) and will probably throw a few extra veggies into it. I've got some spinach that needs to be used.

Tacos last night. An easy meal when you have have the cooked spiced beef in the freezer.

Italian wedding soup tonight. . I found this recipe recently, it’s a keeper. I made enough for my daughter and grandkids. The soup got rave reviews from them.

It's still a work in progress Golden, I had bought some candied fruit to make stollen at Christmas but never got it done so I'm making a version of that. With all the fruit, eggs and butter (plus my cold kitchen) the dough was very slow to rise (I really should have had 2 packets of yeast) but I left the dough to rise over night and shaped it this morning, I'll probably be baking this afternoon.
I've also got a loaf of sourdough going, which always takes overnight to rise. Purists would be horrified at my methodology as I make my bread in a loaf pan and don't follow the recipe or all the fussy prep that is so commonly posted on line. I don't care about amazing oven spring and hard crusts, I just want a nice loaf for toast and sandwiches 😜

I've had a package of yeast floating around in my cupboard that expired 2 years ago and today I got it out and proofed it, fully expecting to confirm that it was dead so I could throw it away without guilt. It's not dead, and now I have to make something with it lol

Margaret, I love your strictly defined division of labor. Sounds very efficient.

My husband and I both love to cook but we have a one person kitchen so we have a strict rule that if one of us is cooking the other is banned from the kitchen or else. It simply doesn't work and can be dangerous.

He makes all the Italian dishes. I cook mostly vegetarian, I'm not much of a meat eater these days.

I'm in charge of doing laundry. He actually likes to clean and I happily let him.

We've each found our niche.

My DH and I have a strict division of labor. He is an engineer, he does the outside (including hanging out the washing if I ask). I do all the indoor cooking and cleaning up from it. I’m an ex-lawyer, so I do a bit more than the washing up if business trials are appropriate – and he does a lot more outside than hanging out washing. He does breakfast, puts it on the table, clears it up, and feeds me coffee before breakfast is ready. I’m happy to be waited on then, and I’m off duty for all of that. I do lunch and dinner, cooking, serving, clearing up, and the washing up. I have a two drawer dishwasher, but bending over it kills my back, so I do it old-fashioned way in the sink (actually on top the kitchen sink in a container).

It doesn’t matter what you each do, as long are you are both happy, and both feel it’s fair and you are cared about.

Send, A truly great salad requires a lot of time and effort. It’s nice that you do this together with your husband.

The thing about making a salad is that my husband and I are developing a routine for preparation that involves cooperation, and slow timing. I take breaks and walk out of the kitchen often.

Working together in the kitchen, then eating together has improved our daily lives.
He tolerates when I rinse and drain everything; I try to tolerate that he puts things away before I am finished with it.

It doesn't matter that salad is not my favorite, but add chicken to that and I'm okay with it.

If he's in a mood or intolerable, I don't return from my break. We've had some really late night salads.

But the salads are a work of art, not even needing dressing.
