If your father didn't prepare a DPOA for health and finances, and has been diagnosed with ALZ /dementia, immediately (like yesterday) file for guardianship. You'll need an elder's advocate attorney and go to court to get it. Be sure to do your research. Taking guardianship is a huge responsibility. If you're not willing or capable the court can and will assign a court-appointed one.

Yes, file for guardianship. If you don't have DPOA, you'll need something to protect your father. This can take time and energy, but please try or at least see an elder law attorney to see if there is a better route.
Good luck,
Carol

You are a good child to your father. Get guardianship, or get the guardian to agree to pay you SOMETHING for caring for him.

Start at the local Area Agency on Aging. They can give you good advice and referrals, and maybe even get free consultation with an attorney.

I would check with Medicare on being named his "representative" so his checks would come to you for his care.
