My elderly mother can not stand up on her own and never makes it to the toilet. She wears no underwear and dribles in her pants till I can help. Is there something I can do? She refuses to wear pants and I don't want her to smell.

It’s time for depends or another brand of adult absorbent underwear. It’s not only about smells, her skin could be at risk from sitting in urine

The absorbent type of disposable incontinence underwear these days is very thin but very absorbent. They are like panties--are you saying she won't even wear underwear? That's gross, even in a healthy individual!

Replace ALL her underwear with these 'pretty' underwear for incontinence and be vigilant about making sure she puts them ON. I'm unsure whether they will hold a 'flood' or just contain a leaky bladder.

It's a tricky situation and I don't envy you that. But perhaps you can point out to her that she is not 'clean' and perhaps even that she has a smell--that is hard to do, but it might ring in her mind that she doesn't want to smell bad.

Be sure she at least washes her private areas everyday, and anywhere the urine has 'dribbled'. Elders are prone to 'diaper rash' as much as babies are, maybe even more so, as their skin is so thin.

It's really a health issue and not just about odor. It sounds like she's not able to manage her toileting now. Her decisions may be so poor that they have to be overridden. I'd get her into the Depends and change then regularly with an upbeat approach, so she stays dry. Setting up a schedule to sit her on the toilet might help too. You might check with her doctor to see if she has UTI or some other kind of infection that could be contributing.
