Went to visit mom yesterday, rode my bike and brought her up a blackcherry trifle, kit kats, and ferreo rochers, sp?? on all that. She was thrilled to see me and was quite upset that someone had taken her hat off her head, the one her mother gave her. She said to me, mom told me to mind my hat. The nurse came in while we having tea and watching Kojak, which she was enjoying and gave her a huge black fur hat, saying look Margaret we found your hat, she was so happy she cried. She made me laugh because she looked like a mad Russian Cossak with this huge hat on and looked like she was going to do that kneel kick dance that the Russians do, funny and she herself then proceeded to bend and kick mock dancing, sometimes I just don't know if my head is on right.

We work on the 3rd floor and needed a box of photo copy papers to be delivered. So, I called the office supply and made my request. In all these years, we always had them do delivery. I figured that this time, I will give him a tip. So, the box cost $43.00. I put aside from petty cash - $4.00. When the man came in with the delivery, I gave him the check (COD) and the tip. He looked at the cash and asked me what it was for. Thinking I was being a cheapskate by giving Only 10% tip, I said, "tip???" He stared at it and then at me. Then, he gave me this big smile and said, "I never got a tip before!!" And I said, "Whew! A minute there I thought you were going to refuse it!" Before he left, he gave us all a very cheerful goodbye. Wow, he never got a tip....

I am happy today that my daughter is taking a day off from her baby watch at the hospital to come to my house and help me decorate a tree and bake cookies. She needs a break from the stress, and since recently being diagnosed with Epstein Barr virus, I am so tired, and appreciate the help. What a joy to have her near at Christmas. Also, please pray for the little HLHS baby that she is trying to adopt. Have a wonderful weekend all you hardworking caregivers.

I went to Kmart after work. It was 645pm and dark outside as I finished off buying stuff for the house. As I approached the man check-marking the receipts as we exit, I gave him a big smile. He smiled back and exclaimed, "You're the first person to smile!" I left feeling so lighthearted that I made one person feel good with just a smile. And his words also reinforced to me that just because I smile to people and they don't smile back - that there Are some people who do appreciate it.

My MIL is actually looking FORWARD to her 3 1/2 week visit with her only remaining sibling/sister in AZ next month. She now tells everyone that it was 'her' idea to go - HA HA HA! I don't know why hearing her say that made me smile today - but it did.

Truth is the opportunity arose for her to stay WITH HER SISTER at her sister's glorious/elegant ALF in AZ and we jumped at the chance for her to visit her sister, have some fun and be looked after in grand style and we will enjoy a nice long break.

Of course, she told me just today that her youngest and his family are coming for a 'short visit' in a few days - have no idea when - on their way home from ELSEWHERE - and he does not communicate with US about anything.

I think I have decided NOT to be home. Think I will go shopping or go have my nails done. She can entertain them and THEY can take her out to eat. They only stay a couple of hours anyway and usually come when we are not home. Gotta love em. :0(

They NEVER let us know they are coming. Last time they called a half hour ahead. They were on their way home from down South and thought they'd stop and see mom while she was in the hospital - they stayed 2 hours.

My mother has been so spiteful since my father's death three years ago, but she has suddenly started talking about how guilty she feels for the things she didn't do while he was ill. After 63 years of marriage, she just didn't believe my father would die. Knowing that Mother's anger is not really directed at me (most of the time) has helped me find a way to make her happier. She really was not strong enough to handle my Dad's needs, and my older siblings didn't handle them well either. She thought they could because they were older. There is a chance for peace between us which is so important for so many reasons. I am her main caretaker, and we both need and deserve to be happy. I guess things really do take time.

My mother came to the book group this evening - in the end I had to do emotional blackmail and say if you won't go I can't go it's not FAIR - but she had a WONDERFUL time! We hadn't read the book (she's got cataracts + stroke fallout; I got annoyed with it and hurled it aside after Chapter 2) but nobody cared, lots of other people hadn't either, the gossip was top quality and the two hours turned into three before we had to come home for an early start tomorrow. Can't wait 'til next month's meeting...

I have been divorced for about 20 years and never dated anyone in all these years. I am a full time care giver for my mother so there is no opportunity to ever meet anyone. While shopping one day for groceries I met a nice man and we got into a conversation about food and juicing and he told me that he knew of a couple good books I should read on it. I gave him my email address and he contacted me to wish me a very Happy Thanksgiving. I am not interested in this person as anything other than a friend but I have to say it really made me feel good that someone I don't know would go out of their way to wish me a happy day!

I'm sort of an atheist, but I love a good prayer.

Thanksgiving Day Prayer
by Walter Rauschenbusch (1861–1918)

For the wide sky and the blessed sun,
For the salt sea and the running water,
For the everlasting hills
And the never-resting winds,
For trees and the common grass underfoot.
We thank you for our senses
By which we hear the songs of birds,
And see the splendor of the summer fields,
And taste of the autumn fruits,
And rejoice in the feel of the snow,
And smell the breath of the spring.
Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty;
And save our souls from being so blind
That we pass unseeing
When even the common thornbush
Is aflame with your glory,
O God our creator,
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
AMEN.
