I took care of several relatives until they passed. After they passed I decided to return to school to get my undergraduate degree in gerontology. I am nearing the end of my schoolwork and am feeling anxious about returning to work. It will have been close to 4 years since I have been in the workforce. On top of that, I am nearing retirement age and am not sure who will hire me! Does anyone have suggestions on an older caregiver returning to a new field? (I was previously an administrative assistant for over 30 years) I know care/case managers will be needed, just not sure where to begin. I've worked a little with the career center at college but they haven't been very helpful. The local gerontological society is pretty vague as well. Suggestions? Thanks!

One suggestion is to check with your local Council on Aging as your field can cover a lot of different aspects of aging, maybe they might be able to direct you to various places that might need an expert on aging. Check with all the local nursing homes/assistant living facilities. Even retirement villages. Plus I think as we age one rather talk to someone who isn't 25 years old, but rather someone more mature, I know I would :)

I'm in a similar situation. I did not expect Mom to improve but now her arthritis is worsening and it seems like someone needs to be here just in case. It is hard to get references when you've been a stay at home care giver this long and in a new market. If I don't work from home, I'd have to have someone fill in and outside care is so expensive. Not many nursing homes will keep her on the right diet that helps her fight inflammation.
