My mom has been in a facility for 2 1/2 years. She complains periodicaly that they dont check her sugar enough or if they do check it and she does need insulin they just ignore her or give her just alittle bit. I have complained numerous times to the director and the head nurse and any other nurse I can talk to. If she is not getting enough insulin overtime and she is 82 and has had diabetes for 40 years what will this do to her overtime if she really is not getting the proper amount. I need to know what will start happening to her if they still won't cooperate and give the amount they should.

Check if mom is on “sliding scale” insulin parameters. If so then at times she WILL be only given a “little bit” of insulin as the dose is related to what her BS was at that time (usually meal time).

You say “periodically”. How often? Mom could very well be forgetful about it as in forget that someone was just there to check it.

I agree with asking the staff to review her BS/insulin administration record. It’s probably all there.

Does you mom have any short-term memory issues? If so you may need to consider that she isn't correctly remembering what is being done in terms of checking her. Has she ever had a cognitive exam by her doctor? Sometimes this form of decline isn't immediately obvious.

I would ask for the medication records and have an independent doctor review them. Your mom may be getting the information she is giving you mixed up. They should be recording what her blood sugar was and how much insulin administered, easily checked on the records and verified by the amount of insulin your mom is buying.

Your profile says Mom suffers from a Dementia. Because of this you can not rely on her. Her short term effects her being able to remember if she had insulin or not. Time probably is a problem too.

ALs rely on Doctor orders. They must comply with those orders. The Nurse does not have the ability to change them. She or an LPN dispenses the med. There are Medtechs that have been trained to give meds.
