Mom needs annual diabetic foot check at podiatrist, follow-up visit to nephrologist, endocrinologist, medication for COPD and possibly pulmonologist, follow-up care with neurologist and a neuropsychological evaluation. She can’t get out of AL due to Covid rules. Now, she is sick - coughing and chest congestion- I can hear her wheezing over the phone. She is also begging to get out - mind you my brother has not moved her furniture in. I’ve told her I can’t help her because the last time I took her to endocrinologist my SIL instructed AL to report me to police. I am not willing to go to jail for taking my mom for medical care. I notified my brother yesterday that she is sick. He came back at me with a smartalec response. Bottom line he had nurse check her and said she must have been agitated cause her CO2 is fine. The AL has a psychiatrist geriatric doctor on board but he can’t do specialized medicine. He’s on board at 20 more AL’s and sees patients in his office in Atlanta 4 days a week. He NEVER examines my mother. But my brother leaves all her medical care up to them! They’ve already been negligent in not giving her insulin for six weeks after her admission and I had to get this straightened out with her regular endocrinologist. If I don’t get my mother out of there and bring her to my home to care for her she is going to be neglected. However, if I do, I risk my brother and SIL doing something vindictive to me. What should I do?

Call the center where she is and inform them of your concerns. Due to Covid most specialist visits are via telehealth. Podiatry can wait although podiatrists are open in my area. So can the rest of the appointments. She doesn’t need a specialist for what sounds like a upper respiratory infection.
She has the resources to request a staff member call the house doctor. I would try to facilitate a visit by him.
I certainly wouldn’t take her home.

The reason for the podiatry is she needs toenails trimmed. My brother is actually the one in control of her care at the AL so I wouldn’t do anything he didn’t agree to. He’s getting so tired of hearing her complain about the place he’s considering taking her out and back home to live alone.

If she has been going to podiatry regularly she can handle waiting another month. Or as stated, podiatrists are open and seeing patients in my area; call around and arrange to transport her to an open office.
Or ask you brother to do so as he is POA.

My brother, her POA, had the AL take her to the hospital for a chest xray. It was after 1 in the morning I got a call from nurse she’s been discharged that brother is in Dallas and can’t pick her up to take ger back to AL. So I said I’ll be there but it will take me an hour. In meantime I get text from brother saying don’t go - that he was sending the cops to the hospital cause they “dumped her out” and he was going to deal with it. So around 2 am I took my sleeping pill and nurse calls back asking why I’m not there. I said I thought my brother worked this out. Well he didn’t and now I fear what’s going to happen to my mom. Hospital said they were sending her back ( AL is across the street from hospital) in an ambulance. I am so confused and all these entities seem to make up the rules as they go (re: covid). For 4 months I’ve not been able to even see my mom through a window at AL and then hospital is demanding I discharge her and take her back to AL? I don’t understand. And my brother didn’t even tell me he was in Dallas, or forewarn me she might need help. I live a good distance away from the AL.
