I am looking for info about "life alert" and similar medical alert units for my 83 yr. old neighbor. Needs to work outside house for 1000 ft. My neighbor walks 1000 feet to her mailbox. She is 83. What medical alert unit would work to contact help if she slipped and fell? It probably should be waterproof, too.

Great Call 5 Star has devices that are actually cell phones and work anywhere a cell would work. My brother got one for mom several years ago. It has a button. She just needs to press it for help. Operators answer and take it from there. They can locate her via GPS, if she's disoriented or unable to respond. They have all our contact info in the system and everything about her meds, doctors, conditions, etc. The monthly fee is less than $20. We got ours at Wall*Mart.

They have several models, they are very small and have ways to attach to beltloops or can be worn around the neck, attached to keyrings, etc. Highly recommended.

One very useful feature for "wanderers" is that you can use the GPS via an APP on your cell or computer to see where the person is and go find them, without having to contact the call center. It's very cool. At any time, you can see where they are.

Oh my gosh, 1000 feet is more than the length of 3 football fields, that's quite a hike for someone in their 80's to and from the mailbox. Traditional units can send a signal up to 400 feet and cellular systems up to 600 feet.

There are waterproof models, too, that can be worn in the shower or tub.

These run around $49 US, in case you're wondering about the initial cost.
