Living on her own, but I worry about her future. She says she wants assisted living but she has no idea of what that means or what it costs--far beyond her means. She gets along now by herself with an intermittent care person (although she goes through them like Kleenex), but she is fading and I'm not sure what the next move should be or how we will afford it.

My mom was over the Medicaid income limit, but when they factored in the cost of the ALF, she falls within income limits. Read the application closely.

If she is on Medicaid, her caseworker can help. Maryland does cover Assisted Living costs with Medicaid. Bear in mind she would have to be ambulatory enough to get to the dining hall and not be bowel incontinent. You say she is fading, so if that may mean a Nursing Home. Talk to her MD about her options.

She's as sharp as a tack. Just has physical limitations. She has a host of doctors who tell her she is fine for her age. She is in a low income senior apartment building. Nope, not eligible for Medicaid. I know quite a bit about what she is currently eligible for, but having a hard time evaluating the next steps. A crystal ball would be a big help. Assisted living is beyond her income (and my gift) means.

Does she have dementia? Who has POA for financial and medicall? What are her current impairments and medications? Has she been evaluated by a geriatrics doc, a neurologist, a psychiatrist? Where exactly is she living now, ie, home, independent living complex? What are her assets/income? What does Assisted Living cost nearby? Is she eligible for Medicaid? Sorry to answer with a list of questions, but that's where you start. You can call your local area agency on aging and get lots of good resources.
