I am paying for an assisted living home placement and now a skilled nursing home placement (co-pay) because all of his days have been used. The monthly rent is $5,000 dollars. I don't know when he will be released to go back to AL.

No, there is not. You may speak to admin about a reduction given your elder is not eating, not requiring any level of care. But as long as you expect them to hold this room, and they cannot rent this room, the obligation is there. As you can imagine if you owned and managed the place.

Usually the AL has a cheaper daily rate when the resident is in the hospital/rehab to hold their room. They don't charge for the meals, etc. during the absence.

When my mom was in the hospital for 10 days, her rent at her memory care that month was less.

When my father had to go to rehab (more times than I can count), if he was out of his AL apartment for more than 14 days they would refund me for the 'additional' services he required for that time. Rent was not refunded because they were holding that room for him. Your landlord does not refund your rent because you took a 2 week vacation?

You can opt out of the ALF holding the room, find out what type of notice needed to be given to vacate, but think about once released from the SNF, he may or may not be able to return based on their rooms available and may have to find another ALF. Sometimes making the right decisions is based on the financial situation.

Most ALs hold the room at a reduced rate, as others have said. The reduction is because your dad isn't receiving meals and other services.

I'd be very surprised if his place doesn't offer this for at least a period of time. They don't want to chuck people out into the street.

What terms and conditions address this in the admission/ contract papers?

Read the contract. With my Mom rent and room/board were separate costs. For her, she had to be in hispital/rehab for over 14 days to get the room/board amt dropped from her bill. She was out 16 so I saw a credit if 2 days.
