A senior has given over responsibilities for home care, checking account, paying bills etc. However, she gets the mail, and opens the bank statements and the confusion of the bills makes her agitated. Any suggestions? She is 86, had a stroke and has dementia, but worries about every penny and doesn't understand the costs, and a "its being taken care of look here is how" isn't good enough because I do it differently then her, ( by differently I mean online, use debit instead of checks..etc.) Its the statement that is tripping this up.

Can you have the mail from the bank re-routed to you? Or have it all done electronically? Someone with dementia is only going to become agitated over these sorts of issues.

I switched from checks to debit card and stopped the physical mailing of statements. Mother could not and would not use a computer. Her bills were still mailed, but I paid everything electronically.

I guess the real answer to your question is that you don't TALK about money to someone with dementia. If she's given over the responsiblity to you, just manage it, don't talk about it.

Switch from paper statements to electronic statements with your email as the place they're sent. I've done that with my mom, who doesn't have dementia, but can't follow her financial statements, bills, etc. Easy as pie. But you'll have to set up an electronic account for her bank account, etc.
