I am trained and experienced as a Hospice Caregiver. I live in New Mexico, and don't want to ask too much (or too little) from a Hospice Client. How about $18 an hour?

Well you could charge that, but since Hospice is fully covered by Medicare, I don't know if the family would pay you out of pocket. Give it a try. Since you are bi-lingual any agency would love to hire you.

I think you could get a little more than $18/hour. It depends on where you are and what the competitive going rate is for your area.

I would consider what the care receiver would have to pay an agency vs what the agency would normally pay you. Hiring someone independent from an agency allows us to cut out the middle man fees and save $$. Don't forget to take into consideration the whole tax/benefits issue, would you be self employed or an employee of your clients?

Depends on your certification. RN?

I am not an RN, but received specific Hospice Training from Presbyterian Hospice last year. During that time, I cared for a Hospice patient, who died after 6 months. I have a BA in Psychology/Sociology, and a Master of Arts in Christian Education. All my electives were in Social Work, so it was like a double major. I have 7 years Caregiving experience altogether, and am fluent in both Spanish and English.

Private caregivers in our area (coastal North Carolina), without medical certification, i.e. NOT a licensed nurse or home health aide, generally make between $12-$15 dollars an hour if they have solid experience and letters of reference. A good place to advertise your skills and availability is on Care website. Good luck! Lynn B., R.N.
