It has been 4 weeks since my husband's dr. has said he would report that he has dementia, which is required by law. The first dr. had not reported and finally agreed to do so last week. If both report, or either, for that matter, how long can I expect the DMV process to take? After the initial report of the diagnosis of dementia, when will the DMV send the letter to my husband with forms to fill out? Four weeks seems like a very long time for my husband or the public to be in jeopardy from a demented driver. I was advised not to get involved and be the focus of his anger about losing this privilege. Do you have a timeline for me? Should I contact the dr. again? Thank you.

We reported mom to the DMV in November, but she didn't get a letter until January, so figure about two months. The DMV then scheduled a road test for May. So the whole process takes a long time.

Better to get involved in his driving priviledges than be involved in a wrongful death suit if your husband ends up killing someone. Better to lose his license than everything you two worked hard for all your lives. In my state, a reporter remains anonymous unless there was intent of malice by the reporter. Do yourself a favor, at least call the DMV and inquire.
