My mother is 94 years old, is EXTREMELY active on her computer, and enjoys watching television very much! Although she moves slowly and uses her walker and her cane regularly, she is sharp as a tack, and completely cognizant of everything going on around her. I am almost in physical pain watching her deteriorating eyesight, and have taken her to a number of doctors. She uses her eyedrops regularly, but is virtually blind in her right eye, and her left eye is starting to fail. Has anyone had experience that might help me? I need to do EVERYTHING HUMANLY POSSIBLE to help her retain her sight, and I fully understand that there is no cure for glaucoma. Any advice will be much appreciated!!

898luvmymom, my sig other has glaucoma and had been using the eye drop prescribed for many years. His Ophthalmologist was able to perform an eye surgery for glaucoma so now he doesn't need to use the eye drops and his eye sight is now stable. He had this done about ten years ago. It was done in the doctor's office with numbing of the eye only for the surgery.

Check with your Mom's Ophthalmologist to see if that is something she could have done. Guess it depends on how far advance is the glaucoma.

Hoping for the best.

Get the best opthalmologist you can and see him or her regularily. That is your best hope for state of the art treatement to make it as good as it can be.

The best care can often be found at University hospitals. And then there's always the Mayo Clinic.

Ask her ophthalmologist about the in-house treatment where they put tiny laser holes in the eye. Both my
Mom and DH had this procedure and they stabilized their glaucoma and no longer needed drops. It was done right in the office but their doctor was a glaucoma specialist. If her ophthalmologist isn’t a glaucoma specialist get a referral to one that is, as this is a pretty specialized procedure.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, or SLT.

Try to find something else for her to do besides using a computer and watching TV.    Unless she has glasses with blue light protection, the computer screen isn't doing any good for her eyes.

Would you feel comfortable helping her learn Braille?   I've just read about Legos with braille letters imprinted on them, designed by someone who is blind.    And I believe there are computers adapted for blind people as well.

I certainly hope you can find some help to avoid the loss of her eyesight though.

Please keep us updated, hon. We will be thinking about the two of you. I love to read. I have lost most of the vision in my right eye. I am so fearful of the left one I have left!
