Dad is coming home to live with me again. He has had 3 strokes. When he was admitted to the NH he could do quite a lot for himself. He was admitted because his behavior was very unstable but he has the correct meds to help with this so he can come home. Now he can barely walk, his good arm has gotten weak from non-use and he can barely talk. he is in bed almost every time I visit him.He is sick almost everyday with vomiting & diarriah. He has a UTI that they can never get rid of. He was healthier at home. Also, my sister has just been diagnosed with cancer and I want to get dad up and on his feet again before we take a trip in my van from Florida to New Hampshire to be with her. I intend to spread the trip over 4 days instead of my usual 2 so that dad is not worn out from so much traveling. I'd like to know if dad leaves the nh on the last day of the month how long can the nh keep his SS check that would be coming to him after he is discharged. They do have 1 months check in their account that they received when he was on the rehab side of the nh. I believe they have that in case there are any cost incurred that medicare/medicaid did not pay while he was there. I went thru this with another nursing home and they lied to us constantly for 8 wks and said they did not recieve his check when SS said that they did. I finally emailed the company that owned the nh and told them that I was alerting the local news channels and medicare/medicaid to find out just why they were not turning his check over to him. They overnited his 2 checks the next day. I don't want to go thru this again. Any suggestions on how to handle the business office this time? I do not have access to dads SS account & he can barely talk to give them the ok to have his Direct deposit put into his account instead of the nursing home.

I did have to take my husband with me to the Social Security Office when I took the Dr's note. What I did was go alone to the SS Office and tell htem the situation. They told me I needed the Dr's note and to bring my husband back with me. When I explained the situation to the lady, she was very kind and told me to come back right after lunch (being I had originally gone to SS first thing in the morning she set me up with an appt). When I arrived, I was to take a number and be seated. As soon as I saw the lady whom I spoke with in the morning, I was to let her know I was there. She was be prepared for me so I would not have to keep my husband waiting. There is no way he could sit for any length of time. He is not able to sign or talk much but the SS worker just needed to see what I was saying was true. I gave her the Dr's note and away we went. So maybe setting things up before you head to the office with your husband will help. The office I went to is a small office with lots of people and long waiting lines. If you can get an appointment, it is a blessing. However, you need the appointment once you get the Dr's note and then take your husband. Good luck and I know there are caring people out there. We just have to reach out to them.

I do have POA but Social Security told me that they do not recognize that and that I can be appointed his representative but dad has to come with me to their office. I live in a Large city and we only have 1 SS office. the wait to see somebody could take all day & I don't think dad could sit in his wheelchair for that long without taking a break to lay down & rest. I didn't know that they would accept a Dr's note saying that dad is ill and not able to make his own decisions. I'll look it to that. Thanks!

If you have Power of Attorney for your dad you can take that to the Social Security Office along with a letter from his Dr. stating he is ill and not able to make his own decisions. Social Security will make you his representative and then you have control of where his checks go. I recently had to become the representative for my husband and the only way I could change his address or let SS know if there was any change in banking.
