My mother receives only Social Security and we are living on my husbands pension so all of our finances are limited. Are there any government subsidised facilities in the North Dallas (i.e., Mckinney, Allan, Plano, Frisco) area? She currently is in retirement community, so we are open to independent living. Though we are also interested in assisted living, as she has a heart condition and problems walking.

Go to HUD.gov for information on the Dallas Housing Authority. They already have a long waiting list. You can also go to the box at the right "Find Housing and Care" and enter the zipcode you prefer for a search. That was very helpful to us to find the right facility.

HUD subsidized rent is generally 30% of your combined income. My MIL thought she could get an apartment for $500 a month, because her girlfriend paid that. Not so.

It is discouraging to see long waiting lists. But if you find something suitable, get on the list. That time will pass whether you are on the list or not. If you no longer need the housing when your name comes up, you can simply pass.
