If her ex-spouse was in any war, not just WWII, check the benefits coordinator at your local state nursing home or VA regional center as she could be eligible for Aid and Attendance benefits as well as placement in the state's nursing home. All of this requires the DD214 military discharge paper. Good luck!

If your mother's assets are below $14,550 and lives in New York State, she can qualify for Community Medicaid. If she has over that amount she will just need to do a little pre-planning this month, and then she will qualify for next month. Some assisted living places accept Medicaid as payment, which will help your mom out-plus Medicaid can pay for home care helpers.

Since your parents were married for over 10 years, she has the option of filing for social security against your dad's work record, provided she has reached the age where she is eligible for social security. If she's at least 65, she can receive medicare. As for additional medical and housing help, that would depend on her income. I would suggest going to your local social services office. Good luck!

Was your dad in WW2? your mom might be eligible for VA benefits, but you'll need a copy of dad's military discharge paper to apply. Check the VA website for their info on how to apply.

Yes, the specific war dates are: WWII from 12/7/41 to 12/31/46, or Korean War from 6/27/50 to 1/31/55, or Vietnam War from 8/5/64 to 5/7/75, or Persian Gulf War from 8/2/90 to the date that is set by Presidential Proclamation or Law. The Aid & Attendance benefit is a federal benefit, so the application is the same all across the United States. We provide monthly, educational workshops on how to fill out the application. I also email the application to those that are unable to get it online.
