I am in 4th stage kidney failure and need assistance on a daily basis. My wife has had to stop working to be at home and help with my care. But we financially cannot afford it.
Sometimes it depends on your state rules. If they do, most likely a small stipend. New York has some helpful programs. Are you a veteran? There may be monies there if you served during wartime.
You may want to consider a facility, on Medicaid, so your wife can get back to work.
I had to quit work to stay with my husband and he is a veteran with 100% disabilities. The stipend is almost not worth fighting for and jumping through the VA's hoops. He is pre 9/11 and we may end up getting about $154/month for me to help him, that after I've been home taking care of him for nearly two years.
The loss of income to help him has been tremendous. Medicaid has some good in home help resources depending on what state you live in.
when I posted about the Medicaid Waiver, I was told that Medicaid will pay $40 a day IF you qualify. Hardly enough to live on. I read they paid $40 a month, so I’m not sure which is right.
There’s more than just a waiver, there is in home support services which pays by the hour not by the day. Usually doesn’t pay much more than minimum wage though and I think it’s rare for someone to be approved for more than 30 hours a week!
Most states have some form of in home support services through Medicaid, which does pay for in-home caregivers and the caregiver can be a spouse or a child or relative. However it’s based on need and your wife would have to be eligible for the program and they would determine how many hours a week she qualifies for. Most likely she wouldn’t be approved for 40 hours a week. And Unless you are in NY, you probably wouldn’t be paid much more than minimum wage.
