My husband bought a van because the number of kids we have increased by one. So now with 4 kids we have more room. The problem is my elderly father needed transportation badly, so I allowed him to use the car that's registered with Medicaid. The Medicaid vehicle is valued at zero because its excluded. Will the van that's worth about $4,500 show up and throw my kids and husband off of medicaid? My renewal came pre-populated with the original vehicle on it, plus a request for bank statements which is normal. My question is if I haven't bought or sold the vehicle in close to a year, will it show up on the database and will it matter at that price?

Ok, some agencies check the DMV records routinely and some don't. I've seen it both ways, and even saw one state give up cross checking on that because the DMV records were so messed up. This is not a big legal issue and don't spend money on a lawyer for what is really a simple question. You should update the Medicaid records with both vehicles. Usually the higher value vehicle would be the exempt vehicle and the lower value one would be the one included as a countable asset. Asset, not income. If that asset is a problem for eligibility, consider selling it to your father and change the title.

Your on Medicaid for health? or is husband being cared for in a NH?

I would think if for health that you would be allowed 2 cars if u both work. Even if u don't work u would need a second car to get around. I guess you r saying that a second car would be listed as an asset raising your income?

If you get a lawyer it has to be one versed in Medicaid.

Defintely a question for an attorney. We could only guess about this complicated question, and quessing is a dangerous thing where legal, financial and medical questions are concerned.
