My mother-in-law would not accept strangers in her home. She was paranoid and thought people would steal from her. She had a lot of mental issues which an outsider would not understand so a family member was mandatory. I need to know how badly IRS is going to tax me or any advise you can provide in this situation. The only thing I have seen on-line re IRS is that each situation handled separately. I'm getting nervous now that the year is coming to an end. Any advise appreciated,

Did you not realize that you should be sending in your taxes quarterly if you are being paid as a contractor? Call the IRS on Monday, before tax season starts and let them walk you through what you should be doing.

Additionally, has MIL been examined by a doctor for her paranoia? Sometimes meds can help.

Do you live in? If so, IRS will most likely consider you an employee. That means MIL should be withholding taxes, Medicare, Social Security and she should also be paying unemployment and disability insurance for you. Do you have a care agreement in place? If not, you should and you need to see an elder law attorney for a variety of issues.

DBill1806, hopefully your Mom-in-law has workman's comp tied to her home owners insurance, if not, have her call her insurance carrier and purchase that rider. Such riders are expensive and not many people know that they need to have this if someone is working on a regular basis in their home.

Heaven forbid if you get hurt on the job, there won't be any money to help you. Hopefully you have health insurance through your husband, or are you purchasing i separately?

My Mom wouldn't allow strangers in her house either, which is a common trait in elders. Wonder who started that rumor centuries ago that in-home help steal :P
There is nothing in my parents house worth stealing, unless they want a set of encyclopedias from the 1960's.
