What does she say when you ask her why she's doing this?

With only the info you've shared here, I would suggest that perhaps she has a bad taste in her mouth...from teeth problems...not brushing her teeth, her medications, or perhaps some other problem.

How about making sure she's brushing her teeth? Or maybe giving her a mouthwash to rinse with. Or some hard candy in a favorite flavor? Trip to the dentist maybe?

that's an unusual habit, in my opinion. I'm guessing they is some root cause.

Harris, is your wife able to clean up the spit she left on the floor? Maybe if she associates that she needs to get down onto the floor and clean, she might stop doing the spitting.

Or as Maggie reference above, maybe it is a dental issue, or even a sinus issue where mucus is gathering in her throat. Usually women will use a kleenex instead of spitting. If you hear your wife getting read to spit, put a kleenex in her hand and to her mouth. Hopefully the brain will imprint that is what she needs to do.

Spitting is a known behavior of the mentally ill (not all), and must be (imop) a symptom of a brain disorder that cannot be helped. Research it, and ask her doctor.

Sounds like a kind of tic, impossible to control as they are often not even aware they are doing it. My mom has a verbal tic, calling for me to "turn me over" even when she is sitting up and not lying in bed. Its maddening that in the midst of me telling her I can't help her because I don't know what she wants she will say "I'm sorry... can you turn me over?"

Another thought, is she spitting out food particles? Often they will pocket bits of food in their cheeks because they lose the ability to swallow completely. Make sure you clean her mouth/teeth well after she eats.
