Find Care & Housing
There are a million reasons why someone falls and an answer to this question is beyond the scope of this site to answer. However there are some precautions you can take to lesson the likelyhood of falling. lets start indoors. Install hand rails in the bathroom and keep loose mats off the floor. Put anti slip strips in the bath or shower. make sure your loved one has well fitting slippers or shoes with an anti slip sole. Keep the house well lit at all times especially halls and stairways. Remove any tripping hazards such as boxes and loose rugs. have strong hand rails on any stairs including just one or two steps such as approaching an outside door. Encourage the use of walkers canes and rollators. Don't hover but stand by ready to hold packages, bags and be extra polite holding doors open. If the patient insists on carrying food into another room provide a cart so he/she can safely clear dishes and feel needed by helping. If Mom/Dad likes to use the kettle to make a hot drink buy an electric one that automatically turns off when it boils or is empty. It may be necessary to disable a cookstove. Won't be popular but provide plenty of dishes that can be heated in the microwave. Any health issues should be addressed. Encourage the use of a life alert device or failing that carry a cell phone. Sometimes a medical emergency causes a fall that can't be prevented. such as a seizure or simply fainting maybe from low blood sugar, you don't need to a diabetic to get low blood sugar.
I am sure there will be many other comments but being vigilant is the best protection for your elder.

Hi Nanrealtor, I'm so sorry to read about your medical issues. Have they ruled out Parkinsons and Multiple Sclerosis? Both of those conditions can cause unexpected falls. Do your legs feel weak before your fall or do you shuffle along when you walk? Are you tripping when you fall, or just going down?

There's also a condition called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) that causes a particular kind of shuffling walk. It comes from excess fluid on your brain. I know of two people who have had it. Tell us more about what happens when you fall. What does your doctor say? Have you had any tests to rule things in or out?
