Does any member have medical or elder care training or experience that might help them cope better? Fewer family responsibilities so more time? One that Mom has always depended on more for advice? Or perhaps rotate the job on a six-month basis?

If you are in the UK, a Next of Kin is similar to a POA in the USA. It does not have to be a blood relative. It can be whomever your mother wants it to be, such as a close friend or trusted advisor.

My mom never filled out a POA document. The nursing home wanted a person to contact. I have that role. When they call to tell me mom is being treated for something or that she needs something I relay that information to my sisters. The nh staff prefers one person to contact them and for them to contact. They can't be expected to call each of us!

Find out what the duties/role of the "next of kin" are. If it basically involves being a contact person, you could roll some dice and decide. If it is more than that, then try to figure out what your mother would be most comfortable with. Can she tell you?
