My mother-in-law age 88 has not had her feet cared for the past 8 months.
Should she see a podiatrist for an evaluation of any foot problems? She is very tottery when she walks and claims that her knees hurt. Her doctor gave her a prescription for Meloxicam 7.5mg which she takes 1per day. She claims that she won't have any surgery on her knees. She only takes a Benicar 1 daily and Levothroxine 1 daily.

Does she have diabetes? I am a Type I diabetic and my Endocrinologist checks my feet for sensation and anything unusual, when I see her. A Primary doctor should be able to do that too. I have seen a Podiatrist before, for a foot problem, but, I would prefer to see a regular doctor. That's just me, though. I suppose that podiatrist help some people. I wasn't impressed.

It wouldn't hurt to see a podiatrist to do the nails and have a general foot wellness check. He/she won't be able to do anything about the knees, though, unless they are related to the foot problems.

Seniorseeker, sometimes foot issues can be as simple as to what type of shoe mother-in-law is wearing.

I know for myself, I need to wear what I call "nun shoes" which are sturdy with tie laces. I use to like to go bare foot around the house, but those days are starting to number, I feel much safer wearing shoes.

As Jessie above had mentioned, a Podiatrist to check the toe nails. A nail that is digging in can make walking painful.

As for knee pain, my Dad had that issue and he was given a prescription for Voltaren Gel, to which he called liquid gold as it worked really good on his knees. If your Mom has bone on bone in her knees, now a days there is a jell that can be put into the knees to help cushion the bone on bone.
