Looking for any info on government funding or tax credits available to seniors and/or senior caregivers in Ontario. Specifically, is there funding or a tax credit available to a senior who needs to do a minor renovation to accommodate a live in caregiver to help care for their spouse with dementia? I have found info on the "Healthy Homes Renovation Tax Credit," but it's specifically for someone renovating to accommodate the senior themselves...thank you!!

What kind of renovation would the caregiver need? Is it needed to make their job easier to care for the client?

I believe it may involve creating an extra bedroom in the house so that he can hire a live in caregiver...he's trying to avoid LTC placement.

Hopefully one of our Canadians will chime in. In the US, this would be at the cost to the family. Then, there's alot involved with having an aid 24/7. You cannot ask one person to work 24/7.

Yes, I forgot to mention that we're in Ontario.

Live in caregivers are quite common around here....usually they come and live with the family to help care for the individual, and in return they get a decent monthly wage as well as living expense and food covered. They would have scheduled time off and be able to take vacations, etc.

Have you called CRA and or your local Seniors group? What about a local tax accountant? I know accountants can be expensive, but they are far less expensive than a costly mistake.

Also tax credits are not the same as deductions, people often confuse the two.

I believe CRA allows a credit for a reno to make the home accessible, perhaps in doing so an extra wheelchair accessible bedroom could be added? There are companies who specialize in accessibility renovations. They would have a better idea of what may be covered.
