My mother-in-law does not have a lot of money and is in the process of applying for Medicaid; unfortunately she may need placement in an assisted living or nursing home before that process is completed. What options are available?

Or go on your state's website, search for senior resources and/or NH that take Medicaid in the state where she lives.

There is a great pamphlet (reader's digest size) that lists all of the options (I know there is one for NJ) and whether they take medicaid or are private pay only. Go to the nearest library, hospital, supermarket to get a copy. You can also call around and ask facilities that very question. Some Assisted Living (ALs) only take medicaid after a period of private pay. Many ALs don't take medicaid at all. You would want to visit places at any rate before a placement so you can begin that process now.
