Hello again. I just got out of the hospital. They said my blood sugar was always over 350 and once it was 512. They said I now have type 2 diabetes. I got discharged back to the nursing home I live in and I ate breakfast and they refuse to take my blood sugar. I can tell it's high and probably need insulin. What do I do? Do I call the department of health or the police? I just don't know why this nursing home refuses to do anything for me. It's called the brickyard and located in Merrillville, Indiana. Thanks for any input.

FYI. NHs have a scope of practice. Nurses cannot to a sliding scale. Nor can they leave meds in patient rooms because if their other patients. My mom was in MC and she could not even have a pair of scissors. You might need one of those long term meds.
I do like the suggestion that since you are of sound mind, you can call 911 on your own.

Can you call a VNA nurse to come in ? Is there a social worker you can speak with ? Diabetes can be reversed with diet . avoid processed foods , anything with fructose , sugary drinks , etc. Try to eat grains , salads , avoid fruit and desserts . You can get a glucose tester from cvs or Walgreens . Tell the Nursing home if they continue to neglect you - you are contacting medicare and reporting them for neglect . That usually works . Call medicare and tell them " You are being neglected . " The Nursing home will respond to that One .

Diabetes can not always be reversed with diet. There are two types 1 and 2. They work differently. 1 is juvenile meaning the pancreas does not make enough insulin so you need to take insulin. Diet helps but this diabetes cannot be cured. 2 more likely especially if someone is obese. Weight loss and diet may help. But this women is in a NH. Food wise, she is not incharge of what she is offered food wise. She also can't call in a VNA nurse. Don't think the NH would allow it. I worked for the VNA and we did not go in where another agency was involved.

Do you have no one to advocate for you? The orders coming from the hospital should show your sugar levels. Do you have your own doctor? Then call them. If the NH doctor has taken over your care, talk to the DON and tell them that you need your sugar checked and a doctor's order for insulin to lower it. You will need a special diet too. If the DON refuses, call APS.

You seem pretty with it. Why are you in a nursing home?

Hello and thank you for the advice. Yes, I am pretty with it. I had a spinal stroke so it didn't affect my brain. The reason I'm in a NH is because I couldn't go live with my son. I lost my wife and youngest daughter a year before my spinal stroke so I was already close to losing it. I am in the middle of a court lawsuit against the doctor who did this to me and just waiting to win some money so I can buy my own place. I'm trying to get transferred to a different NH, one that cares about their people. I will do as you said. Thank you again

Maybe you need to order your own meter and test yourself. A glucose meter is around $20.00, but the strips are more expensive. You can order them from Amazon, or any pharmacy, no prescription is necessary.

Why would I have to buy my own? Just wondering. I pay for things like that here! I can't order my own insulin. They finally took my BS and it was 312. They have yet to do anything about it. I am looking for a new NH. Thanks for the suggestion though.

If you think your health or life is in danger call 911
Contact the Ombudsman. There should be a phone number for the Ombudsman posted in the building.

Call your doctor or speak to the Administration at the facility.
If this doesn't work then make a call to APS and tell them your concerns as a newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic who has returned to your care facility apparently without orders to check your sugars.

Will do. The thing is I do have orders and they are just refusing to take my bs. I'm calling them now as I'm scared. Thank you
