My mother has been in a highly rated assisted living facility since April. When we first met with them, we were promised that they would get my mother to the hospital, if necessary, and manage her medications. Some she moved there, a caregiver stole all of her jewelry. We were able to track her down, have her arrested and be restored of most of the jewelry. The place said they completed background checks for all caregivers. When I went on the general public website for our State, it was stated that this caregiver was convicted in the recent past with armed robbery and retail theft. On the hottest day of the summer, the air conditioner was not working. My mother is on oxygen. They said they would put in a work order. I had to drive there in the middle of the night to throw a fit until they called a repair person in immediately. The final straw was that they did not give her the updated dosage of her medicine for two weeks, resulting in a hospitalization. They blamed me for not following up on this with them when they were already advised in advance that I was out of commission because of hip replacement surgery, followed by the flu. They were told in advance to call my brother, but failed to do so. They also insisted that I pick her up to take her to the hospital when I was not sufficiently ambulatory. When we agreed to move her there, their obtaining transportation and ambulances was stressed because of my inaccessibility to phones during my line of work and my need to travel for work. My husband had to call the main manager to get them to even call an ambulance to transport her in a timely manner since we could not. Would you recommend finding another assisted living, or are they all like this?

You need to talk to the ombudsmen about these deficiencies, especially their hiring practises.

I would find a different, AL, but I'd also have a professional needs assessment done to make sure that AL is the correct level of care for mom.

I agree with BB, on all counts. Have a needs assessment done, move her to a different care center, and report these lapses to at least the ombudsman and probably to the state. It is much easier to be highly rated if deficiencies are not reported.

TwoWorlds, I am curious, is your Mom in an Assisted Living facility which is usually self-pay, or is she in a nursing home which is either self-pay and Medicaid paid?

Why I asked is that my Dad was in Assisted Living and everything ran very smoothly. Even Dad's trips to the ER, etc.

All an AL has to do is call 911. They must have DNR and med list ready for EMTs. Follow up? They have an RN on duty and is responsible for making sure meds are updated. You pay for that service and care.

Their care of your mom is totally unacceptable.

Move her, and don't accept the 30 day notice BS. We went through this; told them that we wouldn't sue if they didn't charge us for the 30 days.

If they can't keep your mom safe, then they don't get your money. But do report them to the State and to the Ombudsman, and get a needs assessment to make sure that mom doesn't need a NH, not AL.

Thanks. They made the promises to call an ambulance if she needed it before I can get there. Also, she is in private pay.
