Dad had a fall and fractured his hip and ribs last August. Surgery went great. since then has been diagnosed with colon cancer. surgery scheduled in January to remove tumor. Medical rehab benefits ran out so h is now at home. Home health care involved, but Mom and I take turns sleeping in Dad's study at night to be there. Sister and partner live in NJ, Brother and spouse/child live out of country. All will be coming for Xmas. What kind of respite care available for me and my mom in interim before surgery and while the rest of family goes back home? Dad has an HMO Medicare plan. if private pay what is reasonable rate for occasional overnight stay? thanks!!!

I would call your local area agency on aging and get the names of local healthcare agencies. Are you getting home health through an agency? Are you pleased with them? Also, some ALs do respite stays short term, especially in the winter in areas where it is cold and snowy.

Just call some AL's near you, but be prepared that they might not have 24/7 nursing care available. Rates in our area a few years ago were around $180/night.

We considered respite care from Luvida Memory Care when my grandmother was ill. They charged us fairly and provided good services.
