Mom started falling more frequently and the last time we took her to the hospital and then to rehab.

Now because Medicare wouldn’t pay beyond a certain mumber of days, they released her after only 17 days. She was nowhere near ready to go back to her home, so we had no choice but to bring her home to stay with my husband and me for a while.

She gets physical therapy twice a week, but it’s like pulling teeth to get her to work on the exercises every day. When she lived alone, she was non- compliant with her meds because of phobias.

Now it looks like the move to our house will be permanent. I get no help from anyone else and because her rehab stay was not long enough (30 consecutive days) she was denied Medicaid benefits for nursing home care.

My question is, what would be a fair percentage for my mother to contribute to the household OR should I just claim her on my income taxes as a dependent?

I forgot to mention that I have been my mom’s sole caretaker for the last 3 years which included her property.

This situation is getting harder to handle, not to mention that my husband and I have been married less than a year. My oldest brother is always making excuses as to why she can’t come and stay with him for a while.

I hate to say this, but I’m getting to where I don’t want to be around my mother anymore. All I feel is resentment.

This isn’t the retirement my husband and I planned.

Kimber166 - would you mind sharing what your mom’s SS is per month? Mom has no other assets or income and only has $1209/mo on SS.

I was originally told by the nursing home that mom could get rehab up to 100 days that Medicare paid for. WRONG!!

In my mom’s case, her 17 day stay in rehab was based solely on her diagnosis at the hospital. I wasn’t aware of this until the nursing home informed me of my mom’s discharge date. Their hands were tied. Yes, I could have left her there, but it would have to be self-pay at $160/day. We don’t have the funds for that.

Evidently, her progress or lack thereof has no bearing on this.

Because she was going into rehab, is the reason she left the hospital. I wished they had all communicated with me better because all of this is new to me.

Needs, from the Medicare.gov site
Days 1-20 $0 copay
Days 21-100 have daily copay $167.50 per day of each benefit period
There is no free period from 40-100 days in traditional Medicare.
Advantage plans may have modification. The donut hole you describe I’ve not seen.

The hospital shouldn't have released her until they had a appropriate place to release her into. I know hospitals make it sound like someone has to leave. But they can't do that. It's a request. You just say "no".

There's a donut hole in medicare between the 20th and 40th day where you have to pay a per day fee. I think it's $165. Once past that it's free again up to 100 days I believe. They should have explained this to you.

Check out assisted livings pegged to her income. You shouldn't have to take her into your home if you do not want to be a full time caregiver. Visit her in Assisted living and advocate for her. There are search options on this site. We found a great AL for my mom that she can afford (she only has SS) and it is beautiful. Now....... to get her to agree to move out of her apartment.... sigh

Does she get SS or any other benefits? If she does I would say 30% would be a fair number.

Princessblue, I am moving your post back toward the front of the pages. Hopefully a caregiver can answer your questions.
