My grandma fractured her hip about 3 years ago. Never had surgery/PT. She’s diabetic and has a lot of medications. Recently, she was admitted because of kidney dysfunction and she is drug dependent whenever she feels pain, she immediately wants to get medicated. So fast forward, she’s having her dialysis now which is 2x a week. I visited her recently and she’s doing good. But we noticed something from her behavior, she told us stories that never happened. And she kept telling us that it did. Until we told her that she never left home and never went outside and from there she agreed to us that maybe it was just a dream. Is this a possible side effect of the dialysis? Or what other conditions can be linked to this? Thank you!!

You profile says Grandmom has ALZ/Dementia. This is probably the cause of her stories.

she wasn’t diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I think before posting we have to choose a category and that’s what’s locked in because it was the first one? Sorry about that.

GA, I don't think anyone contemplates FORCING her to have dialysis. Have there been cases of forced dialysis in the US?

JMHO, but I think this could just be a reflection of aging, of memories slipping by or being reconfigured.

Some years ago my father related an event that affected me, but I had no memory of it.   It would have been in the mid 1990s, but I just could not remember it.  Apparently Dad did though.

I think as we age sometimes recollections become less clear if not distorted, and it has nothing to do with mental acuity.      Even though humans apparently don't use all of our mental capacity, sometimes it just can't handle any more.  Some of us have smaller filing cabinets in our brain than others.

Thank you! Maybe it’s just part of the aging process.

Like Alva said, needs to be discussed with her doctor. Have her checked for a UTI. Is she in charge of administering her pain meds to herself? Is it possible she is over-medicating? Is anyone her medical PoA?

she actually has her set of medications and she knows if she misses one, she’ll feel something wrong, like a “reaction” for that one missing med.

Discuss with her doctor. Now she is in care ask for a Neuro-psyc workup. We aren't really familiar with her or with her condition and history, but her MD will be, and can guide you toward answers on this. I doubt it has anything to do with the dialysis.
