My 89 year-old mom has end stage Alzheimer's and she slouches a great deal and tends to slide down the chair. It is terrible for her buttocks, even while using a ROHO cushion. I use a lift chair because she adamantly refuses to get up and that is the only way I can get her up and moving. I was thinking of getting a geri chair, but would that prevent her from slipping down? Can anybody recommend a good chair for her? I don't mind paying if it helps her. I know Medicare will provide a gerichair but I do not know if that's good for her condition. Keep in mind it's very hard to get her up -- that's why I use a lift chair.

Does anybody have any experience with this and how do they handle it? Thank you.

It’s not the chair but how she sits. She needs a “safety belt” to keep her sitting upright and prevent sliding out of the chair. You can get a bariatric gait belt that would be long enough to fit around the chair and her. You wouldn’t need to stop using the lift chair. Contact a local medical equipment place. They’ll have them.

My mom uses a lift assist recliner to keep her feet up and she has become fond of a slightly reclined position that is upright enough to easily drink her coffee and read the paper but also fully supports her back. Maybe slouching wouldn't be an issue in such a position?

When I was researching geri chairs I was at a loss as to why anyone would spend that amount of money on one when they could get a fitted tilt in place wheelchair instead - of course neither option is going to help with standing. I recommend getting an OT to come out and make some recommendations.
