What is considered "medical information"?

Your profile states that you're caring for your father and that he's in a hospital. Assuming you're physically close to him and the hospital, visit him there, explain to him that you'd like to be able to get information on him and ask if he'll sign a HIPAA consent form.

If he agrees, ask one of the staff for the form. Let them witness it, it will be on file and then you can call the hospital directly.

As to your brother's withholding information, is there some reason why he's doing this? What does he say when he ask him? Perhaps you need to be very forceful in confronting him.

You can also ask your father if he'll sign a HIPAA form for the facility when he returns there.

Are you able to go visit him yourself.. I would hang around the hospital for the day so I could see what is going on.. That should ease your mind. Hugs.. Siblings *uck sometimes..

My brother has him in a dementia/assisted living...disaster. Right now he is in the hospital with what I am guessing is pneumonia...and at 91, that isn't good. I just want to ask if he is eating or drinking or sleeping at night and the hospital insists that is medical information. Just thought Id ask.

Where is your father living? Does he live with your brother?

POA is for when the person can't make their own medically decisions. It's not to be used as a power trip..
