What happens when my Mother's funds run out?

In my state,most memory care assisted living facilities do NOT accept medicaid. When a person's money runs out, the family moves them to a facility (nursing home) that does accept medicaid patients. Sometimes, the family will do this a few months early so that more nursing homes would be willing to accept the patient. That way, the NH gets full payment for a few months. Hopefully you have already explored things like veteran's benefits if your Mom or her husband served. There is info on this site about that.

I'm not sure of the details, but I bet someone will respond to you who does know how this works. It's my understanding that when her funds are out, she would qualify. Have you been told this by Medicaid?

When you say you can't afford rent, are you referring to the place she is staying now, which is the Dementia Care facility? Most of the dementia facilities in NC do accept Medicaid. There has to be a solution to this. Keep check on this site for details. Also, a Medicaid rep would be able to assist you.

Here is a link for Georgia. Is this the state where she is located? I would suspect that she is deemed disabled due to the dementia. I would contact someone with their dept and get an answer. They should be able to give you the details of how to process her paperwork and ensure she is in a proper facility for her dementia.
