Mom is in her 90’s and has been living with us for almost a year. She has mild dementia, but today when I to wake her she was fully dressed and in her chair. She related how I came down last night after she had gone to bed. She told me to go back to bed and that she could take care of herself today. None of that happened! Then she proceeded to dress and go back to bed in her day clothes! She is quite upset that I told her I did not come down and feels like she is losing her mind. Is this Sundowners?

Sleep patterns in the very old change and the ability to distinguish between dreams and reality can break down, she may have had a very lucid dream. Has she changed any medications recently?

If this is a sudden change please be certain to have a urinalysis done. UTIs in elders can cause major changes in mentation.

I go with having her tested for a UTI but, my Mom did this too. At about 3 am every night. She would wake up thinking it was the next day and want to get dressed. I would show her it was still dark outside and she would go back to bed till about 8. I never woke her up. I let her wake on her own or she would be very confused. She rarely went passed 9am. I made her appointments for the afternoon.

Don't argue with someone who had Dementia. You will never win. Your Mom has lost the ability to reason. TV and dreams become part of their reality. Mom is going to have hallucinations. My Mom always saw a little girl. A bad little girl. I could hear her over the monitor talking to her. But the girl would be gone when I got to Moms room.

The problem with Dementia is that its unpredictable. Never know from day to day how the person will be. You think u have it all down pat and boom, they do something out there. Thats why I had a hard time with it.
