In simple words, Normal Pressure Hydrocephalous is when an increased amount of the fluid that normally surrounds the brain inside the skull develops. However, the pressure of this liquid is normal when measured during a regular spinal tap. This is one of four types of hydrocephalous. When this condition develops in an adult, it produces cognitive symptoms that resemble Alzheimer's. Of course, there are other neurologic signs, like poor balance, slow gait and bladder incontinence. As opposed to Alzheimer's, early surgical intervention can reverse some times the cognitive impairment. The most common surgical management consists in inserting in the cavities of the brain, a tinny tube to drain the excess liquid into the patient's stomach (a shunt). Unfortunately, there are many complications that affect this drainage and close follow-up by the neurosurgeon is necessary.
