NJ, I'm so sorry that you are facing the decline of you parents. It's hard!

If you are thinking about Medicaid, the term of art for you mom is "community spouse". The community spouse--the one who is NOT going to the facility, is allowed to remain in the family home, maintain a certain level of funds, have a car, etc.

IMHO, the BEST thing to do is to find a certified eldercare attorney who is well versed in the Medicaid laws of the state where your parents reside. NAELA is an organization that certifies attorneys.

Keep in touch here; if an attorney tells you something that sounds too good to be true, it is. Come check it out here.

Keep us in the loop; we CARE!!

oh, and PS. Not all Assisted Living Facilities (ALs of ALFs) accept Medicaid. Probably the first question you want to ask.
