Mom has a few thousand dollars set aside right now but it goes down $300/month with her AL & miss. Expenses.
Question: could I be missing something?

Yes - her AL doesn't accept Medicaid. That's why I am trying to plan ahead. As far as food, that's included in her monthly rent. I was able to get her drug costs down a lot by signing up for the "extra help for prescription drug costs". Cable is only $20/month but might drop it. Don't think she uses it anyway. One time I ask her she says yes! Next time she shakes her head no. (Dementia) That's another concern - this AL doesn't keep people after a certain point of decline. So by then maybe we will be looking at the NH anyway..& then Medicaid would pay. Seems like I just worry too much!!!

Iowa Medicaid will kick in when the money runs out. BUT you need to know if the facility accepts Medicaid. Many AL's do not.

What kind of misc expenses? We dropped cable, found low cost phone carrier, clipped coupons...depending on spending habits are will drive changes. Check pricing on prescriptions generic vs name brand. If the expenses are increasing level of care, start Medicaid planning as many AL's don't take Medicaid.
