Find Care & Housing
All NH are different and whether or not this is a good fit depends on just what the elder needs (or doesn't need). 2 weeks is a long time for an elder to be somewhere. I would suggest that you do a couple of "play-dates" with them at 2 NH's in advance. Like you both go over for lunch and then mom/dad stays for the balance of the day to participate in whatever the residents are doing that day. Then you pick them up later on. Most facilities really want this done too so that they too can figure out just what level of care is needed. I'm assuming that your elder is still somewhat OK on their ADL's to be able to do a "play-date". Good luck.

If she turns out to enjoy the facility, be prepared to make the decision to leave her there. I have heard of this happening and is probably best for them. Upon your return you are likely to see increased confusion and behaviors that you have not seen before. The fewer moves the better for them. It may be better to have home care for those two weeks if you definitely want to keep the elder home.

Thanks, I have thought about the confusion upon returning back home. I wish I had family members to help out but unfortunately they are all men and say they just can't do it. My husband doesnt feel comfortable with home care alone in our house for that period of time. I will see if mom and I could do a visit before making my decision. She is ambulatory but suffers with PPA so there is no communicating verbally. I am thinking she would enjoy being away from me for a while!
